A new year means you will be accosted with new opportunities and various other possibilities for change and growth. Given that knowledge, preparation is key. To be a better entrepreneur of time and money this year, take these five steps:

Step 1: Focus

Begin each day focused. Take the time to actually visualize and consider those things laid out for you. If there are regular expectations, contemplate how to effectively and efficiently get them done. If there’s a meeting to attend, or a report due, focus on the best presentation methods and proper word choices. Focus just means directing and controlling your thought processes in a productive manner. However, focus is intentional. Make it a daily practice.

Step 2: Review

Once you’ve focused in on the day’s requirements and honed in your thoughts, it’s time to review your goals. Goals are great; they help us retain focus, but only when we keep them at the forefront of our minds. It’s very easy to get lost in the daily grind, the rigor of entrepreneurial life. That’s why regularly reviewing goals is essential to success. When we keep our eyes on the prize, we’re less likely to get sidetracked. Understand that reviewing your goals means making sure you focus on your long term and daily achievement milestones.

Step 3: Research

Certainly the word research sounds like extra work to do, and who wants that? But the truth is, if your desire is to be at the top of your game, you’ll need to be up to date on everything that’s going on in your industry. Subscribe to industry-based magazines, review the news, and research your competitors. You don’t want them to be the ones who develop the next best thing while you’re playing solitaire.

Step 4: Socialize

By socialize, we simply mean, ensure that you are using all relevant social media to your company’s advantage. Social media enables you to stay in tune with clients and customers. It allows you to interact with potential clientele and provides you with an opportunity to be real – not just an inanimate entity on a website. If you haven’t yet, you might want to try blogging as well. This will offer you a chance to show, and prove, yourself as a leader in your industry.

Step 5: Connect

While the world revolves around technology, people still desire a familiar voice, handshake, or lunch date. We are made for relationships and socialization. That said, don’t forget to truly connect to the people in your network. Pick up the phone and call a business partner, or industry supplier. How many times are we stuck listening to canned recordings or reading impersonal email? Be real to your connections and your employees -- they’ll respect you for it!

Be a Better Entrepreneur this New Year

Every day is a chance to change. Let this New Year, 365 days full, provide you with abundant opportunities to make a difference in the lives of your clients and customers. Stay focused, review your goals, research your competitors, socialize via social media and never forget to truly connect with people.
